BIOGRAPHY In 560 Cealwin succeeded his father Cynric as King of Wessex, the same year in which Ethelbert became King of Kent. During Cealwin's reign Pope Gregory sent missionaries to England, and in 591 Columba ministered to the Picts in Scotland. Cealwin died in 593, having been driven from his kingdom after the great slaughter of Britons at Wanborough.
